Pianuance

2026 — now

Pianuance turns a digital piano into a practice partner. Connect the piano over USB or Bluetooth MIDI, open a piece, and the score follows you as you play. Every note is marked right, wrong, early or late, and the bars that need work are picked out for you.

What it does

  • Practice, play-along and sight-reading modes, with loops, slow practice and a tempo ladder
  • Your own music: import MusicXML, or turn PDFs and recordings into scores (Pro)
  • Courses, exam-style tests and ear training, plus a teacher mode for lessons
  • Runs on iPhone, iPad, Android, the web, Windows, macOS and Linux

How it's built

  • Expo and React Native (New Architecture) for one codebase across phones, tablets and the web
  • Verovio, the C++ music engraving library, compiled for iOS and Android and called through JSI
  • react-native-skia and Reanimated to draw the score and the moving cursor smoothly on the UI thread
  • Native MIDI modules in Swift and Kotlin, so notes from the piano arrive with low latency
  • A practice engine in plain TypeScript, separate from the UI, that matches what you play against the score
